How to Save a VCF File from WhatsApp
To save a VCF file from WhatsApp, open the attachment, choose the option to add or import its contact details, and confirm the save. Then find the person in your phone’s Contacts app. Downloading the file alone does not finish the job. If the message is a shared contact card instead, use its add-contact option.
First, check what the message contains
Look at the message before choosing a method. A filename ending in .vcf identifies a vCard contact file; a contact card presents someone’s details with actions for saving or messaging them. A web link is a separate route and may require another download before you can save anything. A photo of a business card is different again: it is an image, so enter its details manually if no contact file is available. Ask the sender for the original VCF when you need to keep the details together. You do not need to export the whole WhatsApp conversation to save one person.
Save a contact card shared in the chat
Open the conversation and tap the shared contact card. Use the option to add the person to your contacts, review the name and number, and finish with Save or Done. The wording depends on the screen you see. If you are offered a choice between creating a contact and adding information to an existing one, check whether you already have that person saved. Take care when someone forwards another person’s card: save the details on the card, rather than assuming they belong to the person who sent the message. WhatsApp Help Center confirms that recipients can save shared contacts or message them directly.
Save a VCF attachment on Android
Tap the VCF attachment in WhatsApp and let it download if needed. If an app chooser appears, select your Contacts app and complete the import. If tapping only opens a preview, use an available save or share action to keep a file copy somewhere you can find. In Google Contacts, open Organize, then Import from file. Choose the destination account if prompted, and select that VCF. This is the import path documented in Google Contacts Help; another phone maker’s Contacts app may use different menus. Search for the saved person afterward before trying the import again.
Save a VCF attachment on iPhone
Open the WhatsApp chat and tap the .vcf attachment. When the contact details appear, use the available add-contact action, review the entry, and confirm with Save or Done. If the preview offers Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact, choose the one that fits. Apple’s iPhone User Guide documents importing a vCard by tapping its attachment in an email or message. If WhatsApp does not offer a working way to save it, ask the sender to send the same VCF by email and open the attachment in Mail. Keep the original message until you have found the person in Contacts.
If the person appears in WhatsApp but not in Contacts
Check where the contact was saved. WhatsApp supports contacts stored only in your WhatsApp account, separately from your phone’s address book. Open the person’s contact details in WhatsApp, edit the contact, and enable Sync contact to phone, or Sync to phone, if you want a phone contact too. If that option is unavailable, check WhatsApp’s contact permission in your phone’s settings. WhatsApp Help Center explains that phone contact access is needed for this sync option. Once saved, look again in your phone’s Contacts app. For a VCF imported into Google Contacts, check the account you selected during import.
If the attachment will not download or open
Start by separating a download problem from an import problem: can you open the file at all, or does Contacts reject it after opening? If the attachment is unavailable, ask the sender to resend the original VCF. If Android opens it in an unsuitable app, try selecting the downloaded file from Google Contacts’ Import from file screen instead. For iPhone, use the email attachment fallback above. Do not change a photo or document’s filename to end in .vcf; that does not turn its contents into a contact. You can also enter the confirmed name and number manually when you only need that one contact.
Check for missing details before importing again
Open the saved entry and compare its phone number, email, company, and any important notes with what the sender intended to share. If something is missing, ask for confirmation or a fresh contact file instead of repeatedly importing the same attachment. Google Contacts Help also suggests checking the contact’s notes for details not found elsewhere after import. With a Business Card Tap card received as a web link, long fields can be shortened when saved from the card page; ask for the direct contact file if a long note is incomplete. Before creating another entry, search for the existing person by phone number to avoid adding an unnecessary duplicate.
When Digital Business Card: NFC QR helps
Digital Business Card: NFC QR is useful when you are sending your own details. In the app, open Share, tap Send card, then Send contact file. Choose WhatsApp from the Android share sheet if it is available, select the intended chat, and send. The app creates a VCF from your card; the recipient still needs to save it using their phone’s contact tools. It does not import incoming WhatsApp VCF attachments, manage your phone’s address book, or repair a damaged contact file. Restore from backup is for the app’s own backup files. If your task is simply to save someone else’s attachment, use Contacts directly.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know the contact actually saved?
Leave WhatsApp, open your phone’s Contacts app, and search for the name or number. Open the entry and check the details you need. A contact preview inside the conversation is not enough to confirm a phone contact was created.
Can I keep the VCF file without adding the contact?
Yes. Keeping a file copy and importing its contents are separate actions. If the attachment offers a save or share action, keep the copy in a location you recognize. Import it later through the appropriate contact tool.
Do I need an online VCF converter?
No converter is needed for the VCF import methods described here. Avoid uploading someone’s contact file to an unfamiliar website. If the file cannot be imported, ask the sender for a fresh export or enter the confirmed details manually.
Can one VCF attachment contain several people?
Yes. Apple’s iCloud User Guide explains that a vCard can contain multiple contacts. Check what you received before importing. If you only want one person, ask for a file containing just that contact.
Will saving the VCF keep the person’s details updated?
Treat the attachment as a copy of the details sent to you. A later correction in the sender’s own card does not replace that file. Ask for updated details when needed; syncing your saved contact across your devices is a separate process.
Is it safe to open links inside a received card?
Do not open links in a card from someone you do not know or trust. Confirm unexpected details with the sender before using them, and avoid forwarding someone else’s private contact information without their permission.
Turn your phone into your business card. Business Card Tap sends your details to another phone with a tap over NFC, and falls back to an on-screen QR code when NFC isn't available. Fully offline, no account.
