How to Save VCF Contacts on Android
To save VCF contacts on Android, open Google Contacts, tap Organize, choose Import from file, select the destination account if prompted, and pick your .vcf file. Downloading the file alone does not add its contacts to your address book. Samsung Contacts has a separate import menu, covered below.
Import the file with Google Contacts
Start with the .vcf file saved on your phone. In Google Contacts, open Organize at the bottom of the screen, then Import from file. If several accounts are available, choose where these contacts belong before selecting the file. Find the saved VCF and tap it to start the import. These are Google Contacts steps; if your Contacts app has different menus, check which app you opened before looking for the same buttons. You do not need to type each phone number into a new contact.
Find the VCF you received
If the file arrived in an email or message, use that app’s download or save control first. Note the filename so you can recognize it in the import picker. Look in your phone’s Files app; your manufacturer may use a different file manager. Check Downloads if that is where you saved it, or sort files by date to find a recent download. If tapping the file opens a text preview, return to Contacts and import it from there. Keep the original attachment until you have checked the saved contact.
Use the import menu in Samsung Contacts
In Samsung Contacts, open the menu, choose Manage contacts, then Import or export contacts and Import. Select the location containing your VCF, choose the file or contacts offered, and tap Done when prompted. Choose where to save the contacts, then confirm Import. Samsung’s menus can vary by software version, so use the import option shown on your device. Check that you are importing from the location where you actually saved the file; an attachment still sitting in a conversation may need downloading first.
Choose where the contact should live
Choose the account you want to use for this relationship, especially if your phone has both personal and work accounts. Contacts saved to a Google Account can sync across devices signed into that account. If your Contacts app offers Phone, Device, or Local storage, those entries are stored on the device and are not automatically Google contacts. Device-contact backup is a separate setting whose availability depends on the phone. For contacts you want on another Android device, check the destination account and its sync settings before assuming the transfer is complete.
Check that the contact was saved
Return to the Contacts list and look for the imported person. Open the entry and compare the phone number and email address with the details you expected. If it is missing, check the account filter before importing again: Google Contacts lets you select an individual account or display All contacts. A contact outside the current view can look as though it never imported. If the entry appears on this phone but not another, check Google Contacts sync for the account holding it. Pulling down on the Google Contacts list starts a manual sync.
If Android will not import the file
First check what you received: a vCard contact file normally ends in .vcf. A screenshot of a business card, a web page, or an app backup is a different kind of item. Changing its filename to .vcf does not turn its contents into contact data. If a downloaded VCF still fails through the Contacts import menu, ask the sender for a fresh contact export and keep the failed copy for comparison. Avoid editing unfamiliar file contents as a first fix. Open contact files only from people you recognize, and leave unfamiliar links inside a card unopened.
Handle duplicate entries after importing
If you now see two entries for the same person, review both before deleting anything. In Google Contacts, select the account containing the duplicates, then look for Merge & fix in the management area and choose Merge duplicates. Google’s instructions place this under Fix & manage; labels can differ from the Organize tab used for imports. Accept individual merge suggestions after checking the details. Google Contacts cannot merge entries stored in different Google Accounts, so check their accounts if the option you need is unavailable.
Save a contact shared through Digital Business Card: NFC QR
If someone is sending you a card from Digital Business Card: NFC QR, they can open Share, tap Send card, then choose Send contact file. That opens Android’s sharing options with a .vcf attachment. Receive and import that file using your Contacts app. If they sent a card link instead, its Save contact button provides a VCF download; finish the import on your phone afterward. The app shares the sender’s card. It does not import incoming VCF files or replace your phone’s Contacts app, and sending a file does not automatically save it on the recipient’s device.
Check incomplete or incorrect card details
If a card from the app has missing information, ask the sender to compare the saved contact with their current card. Second phone, address, second website, and note are Pro fields and are excluded from sharing when Pro is inactive. There is also a current card-link limitation: each text field is shortened to 500 characters, which can cut off a long note. For that case, ask for Send contact file directly instead of downloading through the card link. An email warning in the app does not prevent the address from being saved, so correct a flagged address before sharing again.
| What you received | What to use |
|---|---|
| A .vcf attachment | Your Contacts app’s file import option |
| A Business Card Tap web card | Save contact to obtain the VCF, then import it |
| A card screenshot | Ask the sender for a contact file |
| A Business Card Tap .json backup | This is an app backup, not a VCF contact file |
Frequently asked questions
Can one VCF file contain several contacts?
Yes. A VCF can contain multiple contact records. Check which contacts the file includes before importing a shared address book, rather than assuming every VCF contains only one person.
Do I need to convert a VCF to CSV first?
No. Google Contacts on Android accepts VCF files through Import from file. Converting to a spreadsheet is unnecessary for this task.
Can I save the contact without a Google Account?
If your Contacts app offers a local destination such as Phone or Device, you can use that option. Local storage and Google Account storage have different backup and sync behavior; check which one you selected.
Can I delete the VCF after importing it?
After confirming that the expected contacts and details are saved, you can delete the downloaded file. Keep a separate copy if you still need the original export as a backup.
Will the saved contact update when the sender changes their card?
Treat an imported VCF as a copy of the details in that file. Ask for updated details or edit the saved contact when something changes. Syncing your own Google contacts does not establish a live connection to the sender’s card.
Turn your phone into your business card. Business Card Tap sends your details to another phone with a tap over NFC, and falls back to an on-screen QR code when NFC isn't available. Fully offline, no account.
