How to Save VCF Contacts on iPhone
To save a VCF contact on your iPhone, open the .vcf attachment, review the details, choose Create New Contact, and tap Done if prompted. If you already have that person saved, use Add to Existing Contact when offered. Then open Contacts to check the result.
Save a VCF from Mail or Messages
1. Open the email or message containing the contact file. 2. Tap the attachment ending in .vcf to open the contact preview. 3. Review the phone number and other contact details before saving. 4. Choose Create New Contact to save a new person, then tap Done if prompted. Apple documents opening a .vcf attachment in email or a message as the iPhone import route. Finish the contact-saving prompts before closing the preview; opening the attachment is only the start of the process.
Update someone already in Contacts
Before creating another entry, search Contacts to see whether the person is already saved. If the VCF preview offers Add to Existing Contact, select the matching person, review the added information, and confirm. Compare the contact details so you choose the right entry. If that option is unavailable, you can update the saved contact manually: open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, enter the new details, and tap Done. Confirm which details are current before removing an older number.
Find a VCF downloaded from a website
If a website downloaded the file, open Files, tap Browse, and look in Downloads. If you do not see that folder, check iCloud Drive. You can also use the Downloads button beside Safari’s search field to find a recent download. Open the .vcf and look for the contact-saving options. If you get only a file preview, use the email attachment route above: ask the sender to attach the VCF to an email you can open in Mail. A file appearing in Downloads does not confirm that its contact has been saved.
If the file opens as text or will not import
If you see raw text or an error instead of usable contact details, stop there and request a fresh vCard export from the sender. Ask for the actual .vcf attachment rather than contact text pasted into the message. Try opening that attachment in Mail or Messages, following Apple’s documented import route. If you only need one phone number urgently, create a contact manually in Contacts using the Add button, enter the verified details, and tap Done. This gives you a way to save the information while the sender replaces the file.
Check where the contact was saved
Open Contacts and search for the saved entry. If the person is missing, open Lists and check the contact lists for your accounts before importing again. For future new contacts, a phone with multiple contact accounts lets you choose a default under Settings > Apps > Contacts > Default Account. Select the account you want to use. Changing this setting does not move existing contacts between accounts. If an expected account’s contacts are missing altogether, check Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts, select that account, and check that Contacts is enabled.
Save several contacts from one VCF
A vCard file can contain more than one person. For a file containing several contacts, Apple documents an alternative through Contacts on the iCloud website, which requires a tablet or computer. Open Contacts on the iCloud website, sign in to your Apple Account, select the Add button, choose Import Contact, and select the VCF. Each person in the file becomes a separate contact entry. To see those iCloud contacts on your iPhone, use the same Apple Account and enable Contacts in your iPhone’s iCloud settings. Check the imported entries before importing the same file again.
Save a contact sent with Business Card Tap
Digital Business Card: NFC QR, also called Business Card Tap, lets a sender choose Send contact file to share a VCF. Open the received attachment using the steps above. If you received a card-page link instead, the page has a Save contact button that provides a .vcf file and an iPhone hint to choose Create New Contact after opening it. Your iPhone handles the final save; the app does not automatically add the person to your iPhone Contacts. Only open cards you expect, and skip unfamiliar links within them.
If a long note is missing
Business Card Tap’s card-link page currently limits each text field to 500 characters, so a long note can be shortened in the VCF obtained from that page. If you need the complete note, ask the sender to use Send contact file in the app and send the VCF attachment directly. That route does not apply the card page’s 500-character cutoff. Compare the received note with the sender’s original before relying on it. Reopening the same card link will not recover the omitted text.
Correct the saved details or a duplicate
After saving, open the contact and check the details you will actually use, including the country code when relevant. To fix an entry, tap Edit, make the correction, and tap Done. If Contacts shows View Duplicates below My Card, open it and review the suggested matches individually before merging. Compare the contact details first to make sure both entries belong to the same person. Avoid deleting an entry just to clear a duplicate: Apple notes that deleting a contact from an email account also deletes it from other devices signed into that account.
| What you received | Where to start |

Frequently asked questions
Are VCF and vCard the same thing?
In this guide, VCF means a contact file with the .vcf extension, and vCard is the contact format it uses. A single file can hold one person or several people; the filename alone does not tell you how many.
Do I need a separate app to import a VCF on iPhone?
No separate VCF importer is required for Apple’s documented method: open a .vcf attachment in email or a message and complete the contact-saving prompts. If another app only previews the file, try opening the attachment in Mail or Messages.
Should I use Import SIM Contacts for a VCF file?
No. Import SIM Contacts is for contacts stored on a SIM card. For a received VCF, open the .vcf attachment in an email or message instead.
Will saving the file update my other Apple devices?
For a contact stored in iCloud, the other devices need the same Apple Account and iCloud Contacts enabled. Check which account contains the entry if it appears on your iPhone but is missing elsewhere.
Can I save just one person from a file containing several contacts?
If you only want one person and the import screen does not let you select that entry, ask the sender for a separate VCF containing that contact. This avoids adding the rest of the file to your address book.
Turn your phone into your business card. Business Card Tap sends your details to another phone with a tap over NFC, and falls back to an on-screen QR code when NFC isn't available. Fully offline, no account.
